Oil paintings by Sally Whisson Mattner

This body of work explores my interaction with the landscape. It captures the ways in which the landscape speaks to me. Each place is unique and passes on to me its mood on that day and at that time. We chat. I then try to honour that conversation and ‘sharing’ as I paint. I try to capture that special place, time and mood and its connection to the big scheme of place. These works aim to portray the landscape as the living being it is. As such, the titles often personify the places to capture my conversations with them.

I hope my paintings will engage you with these places and remind you of a conversation or connection you’ve had with the landscape even it’s been subconscious. Perhaps they will inspire you to explore or re-explore some of these locations yourself, in person or from your armchair (!). Step into the artworks and have a chat.

Please enjoy.
