An artist who preferred to let his work do the talking, exhibiting under the alias Brian Roche while quietly supporting the work of others, Bruno Rocchi – the man behind the name – has emerged.
Never one destined to be in the shadows, with characteristic flair and flourish, artist Bruno Rocchi has entered the art world with aplomb, quickly striking a chord with collectors and admirers alike. Bruno has long held a deep appreciation for the classics, with oil painting and the human form being a natural fit.
Not to be pigeon-holed in life or on the canvas, his approach to each painting is shaped by the subject itself, allowing each style of work to find its own voice through the personalities, stories and places that inspire him. Running through all of Bruno’s work is a distinctly human focus. His natural connection with people and enjoyment of passionate conversations are reflected in his people-centred subject matter. Influenced by the diversity encountered through world travels and his proud Roman heritage, his paintings explore the connections between people and the interconnections that bind us to each other and to the world around us.
Bruno’s fascination with art and the human form began early at Montsalvat, where observing artists at work and seeing the human form translated onto canvas left a lasting impression.
His practice is enriched by renowned artist Peter Smales, a valued tutor, mentor and friend. Although their artistic interests and stylistic languages are distinctly different, Peter guides his pupil with the insight of a master, strengthening Bruno’s observation, technique and artistic judgement while allowing his individual voice to emerge. Bruno’s background in electrical engineering underpins his artistic inquiry embracing non-structural engineering concepts; a meeting of structure and expression that informs his approach to composition, form and colour, with his trademark fondness for yellow.
