INTO THE WIDE SHALLOWS

oils and watercolours by Pamela Reid

Today I walked to not a sound.    A breath, a pause, a footprint in the sand.

The waves were pounding, rising white, breaking blue.    Chasing the shoreline, each step a sigh.

I sit on the land, sensing and seeing the stillness in contours, in colours, the shaping of scapes absorbed onto canvas.

A wanderer, an en plein air painter, I wrote these words, reflecting on ‘why’ I walk daily, drawn to the ever-changing light and its impact on land and seascapes.

To then sit on the earth, sketching, colour mixing on my palette, painting in oils or watercolours, capturing the textures and light movement is my fulfilling, artistic pleasure.

I’m a traveller too, always roaming. Past art history & painting workshops in Tuscany (Italy),

Provence (France), along with Residencies in England’s magnificent Lake District and more recently, Arte Studio Ginestrelle, Assisi (Italy) have strongly influenced my creative responses.   At home, my morning beach walks around Port Phillip Bay, the breadth of Surf Coast skies and ocean, Aireys Inlet and the landscape dominance of Split Point Lighthouse.  These experiences have come together for my latest exhibition, “Into the Wide Shallows”.

About me…
My professional career began in Advertising (Aust and UK), then for more than 25 years in the music and entertainment management industries. My love of both performance and visual arts, along with an ability to visualise, comprehend design and composition, played an essential role in my working life, while informing my personal passion for art.

I am a multi-disciplined artist, enjoying life drawing as well as painting. When life drawing, I respond to the impact of light and tonal qualities on gesture and form volume, working in a variety of mediums: pastel, charcoal, ink & watercolour, collage and printmaking techniques.   I have been the recipient of Community Arts Grants for projects in City of Port Phillip, and City of Stonnington, and run introductory workshops in Abstract and Life Drawing. I see my artistic growth
as continued ‘new beginnings’.
