    Description

Mixed media – acrylic paint, ink and charcoal with brushes, palette knives and fingers

    unframed

Inspiration: ‘Eagle Country’ is an intuitive impression of several
images from a trip around Central Victoria at Easter time in 2021. It was our first trip after one of Victoria’s many lockdowns. I imagined a scene
influenced by First Australians in Dja Dja Wurrung country, the land of Bunjil, the Wedge-tailed Eagle. While an eagle is not part of the painting, it’s majesty, strength and mysterious influence is. The painting is not intended to be a realistic depiction, rather it’s an expression from my imagination and thoughts.

The approach: ‘Eagle Country’ is highly textured and has several layers of paint which have been applied, then rubbed back. I also used dry brush method to create a rough and rugged look, typical to the area of Central Victoria. I used old brushes, palette knives, dabbing rags and my fingers to apply the paint. Highlights of ink and heavy strokes of charcoal have been applied after the paint layers dried. The focus of this piece is primarily the colours. The next focus is the deliberate sectioning of the canvas into light and dark areas.
